MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS 2019 - SOCIALISTS RETAIN CONTROL OF COUNCIL
José Chulvi secures a third term as mayor after PSOE win absolute majority

Monday 27th May 2019

JAVEA NEWS | MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS 2019 - RESULTS

José Chulvi has secured a third successive term as mayor of Xàbia after his socialist PSOE party claimed 11 seats - and an absolute majority - in the municipal elections yesterday. The Populares, led by Rosa Cardona who was bidding to become the town's first female mayor, secured five seats, up three on 2015 whilst Juan Ortolà's Ciudadanos Por Jávea and Vicent Colomer's Compromís claimed two seats each. The C's mayoral candidate Enrique Escrivá will be the party's sole representative on the council. Podemos failed to secure a seat.

The turnout for this year's municipal elections was 55,43%, down just over 3 points on 2015, and Chulvi's PSPV-PSOE attracted just over 45% of the vote, down some 10% on 2015 but Chulvi himself has always said that the result of four years ago was always going to be a result that could never be repeated. Five councillors for the Populares means that they can become a more effective opposition once again, having spent the last legislature with just two councillors, whilst Ciudadanos Por Jávea remain with two seats, the same return as the 2015 elections which they fought in coalition with the now-defunct Xàbia Democraticá, the two seats held by the latter were claimed by Compromís and the C's. Podemos attracted less than 5% of the vote and therefore missed out on a representation on the council.
