CD Jávea 0-0 CD Denia

Sunday 31st March 2019

They are two towns separated by a high mountain but nothing could separate them on the football pitch as fierce rivals CD Jávea and CD Dénia had to settle for a 0-0 draw on a cool, windswept and damp early evening at the Campo d'Esports Municipal. Watched by a bumper crowd who braved the elements, the two teams ultimately cancelled each other out in a battle of attrition during which the home side just about edged things in the possession stats and should have snatched a late winner just seconds before the final whistle.

The damp weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm for this encounter and many of the seats in the main stand, thankfully now sheltered partly from the elements by a roof, were claimed long before kick-off and it was very much standing room only elsewhere under the cover. And they joined together to acknowledge a special pre-match presentation to club captain Aldo who was handed a commemorative shirt printed with the number '300' which represented the number of matches the popular player has chalked up in the Preferente.

The game began in blustery conditions with Jávea having the advantage of the wind which was significant as Dénia's high clearances stalled in mid-air against the fierce gusts. The home side had much of the early possession, controlling the game in midfield and utilising both flanks well to open up a series of opportunities. On 7 minutes Michael won a free.kick on the right and Marcos floated the ball across the face of the goal which eluded everyone but dropped just wide of the far post. A few minutes later Marcos was on hand once again to float another great free-kick into the box, this time from the left side, but the ball was collected well by the keeper under pressure from Jávea's Cristian.  For the opening fifteen minutes it was all Jávea, aside from one heart-stopping moment when Jávea goalkeeper Edu misjudged a back-pass which got caught in the wind and had to clear well under pressure whilst being several yards outside his area.

It wasn't until midway through the first half that Dénia finally worked themselves into the game with Luis second a fine free-kick into the box which was plucked out of the air well by the keeper under pressure from several yellow jerseys. A few minutes later Dénia forced the first corner of the game and Luis sent in a nice kick which was punched clear by Edu who was fouled in the process, the referee awarding a free-kick which brought an end to a little pressure from the opposition. At the other end, skipper Aldo launched a great pass to Michael whose effort flew just wide of the right post. A minute later, Michael was on hand to meet a clearance from Paco's free-kick but his effort floated well over the bar. And in the last real action of the first-half, Lucas Bou collected a clearance from the defence but his shot was also too high.

The second-half brought plenty of action right from the opening whistle with Jávea now battling against the wind. Within a minute the home side forced a corner, taken by Paco who played a short ball to Michael but the latter's cross was well cleared. A minute later Marcos sent in a free-kick which was well met by Paco who fell to the ground under pressure from the defence and there were genuine calls for a penalty from both on and off the pitch; the referee was having none of it. Crunching tackles were the order of the day for the second period and the official showed several yellow cards for over-enthusiastic challenges typical of a derby game. On 57 minutes Dénia had a chance to open the scoring when Luis sent over a cross for Panucci whose header was well-saved by Edu. As the matched ebbed to and fro from half-to-half, chances were limited to snatched opportunities. On 66 minutes substitute Favio might have done better with a header but the ball was well wide of the left post. Four minutes a corner from substitute Pau was met by Ayoze but his effort was too high. At the other end Panucci went close with a header before a short goal-mouth scramble in front of Dénia's goal just needed an out-stretched foot to divert the ball into the net but the visitor's were able to clear under great pressure. And in the last chance of the game Jávea's Cristian fired just wide of the left post to bring the game to a close. Jávea stay fourth and still in touch with the top three but the games are running out to claim a play-off spot.
