UNEMPLOYMENT IN XÀBIA RISES FOR SIXTH SUCCESSIVE MONTH
Unemployment remains well below national as well as regional averages

Wednesday 22nd February 2017

JAVEA NEWS | Employment - Paro Xàbia January 2017

Unemployment in Xàbia rose to 1,808 at the end of January, up 19 on the previous month and the sixth successive rise which reflects the seasonal nature of employment in a resort town on the Costa Blanca. Those registered as being out of work across the Marina Alta rose slightly to 13,508 whilst unemployment nationally also rose to 3,760.231 as the Christmas and winter campaigns drew to a close.

Unsurprisingly the Services sector, which includes restaurants, bars and hotels and accounts for almost 80% of all employment contracts issued in Xàbia, saw the biggest rise, climbing 35 to 1,340, almost 75% of those registered as out of work. Unemployment in the Agricultural sector rose slightly to 20 whilst both the Industry and Construction sectors fell by 2 and 12 respectively. The number of those jobseekers non-affiliated to a sector and looking for work dropped slightly to 126.

Across the Marina Alta, Ondara remains the most difficult place to find work with an unemployment rate of 16.3%, almost 5.5 points above Xàbia. Dénia saw 58 more people registered as out of work than December 2016 with an unemployment rate of 15.0%. At the other end of the scale, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell's unemployment remains in single figures (7.3%) but the municipality continues to be the worst place for young people to find a job with the unemployment rate for the under-25's almost touching 10%. However, it wasn't all doom and gloom in the region with Ondara, Pedreguer, Benissa, Pego, Gata de Gorgos, Xàlo and el Poble Nou de Benitatxell all reporting drops in unemployment.
