NEW PARKING RESTRICTIONS CREATED IN AMBOLO ZONE
New regulations will guarantee access to residents and emergency vehicles

New parking restrictions have been put in place in the Ambolo zone to deal with the chaos created by visitors to the popular beach during the summer. The Ayuntamiento de Xàbia has decided to take stringent measures to reduce the number of vehicles parking in the zone which has been preventing access for residents to adjacent streets such as Calle Samuel Adler as well as making it difficult for emergency vehicles to access the zone in the case of an incident.

The Department of Services, headed by councillor Kika Mata, has painted distinctive and unmistakable yellow markings on the road and erected signs banning access to the end of the Calle Richard Wagner, a street that has been closed by landslides which continue to affect the zone, as well as warning that irresponsible parking, especially in the area of the tight bend, will result in vehicles being removed by tow truck. Over the next few days, the police will be carrying out a special monitoring campaign to ensure that visitors comply with the new parking restrictions and fine will be applied to those who choose to ignore them.

Each day the zone has been filled with the cars of visitors who want to park as close as possible to enjoy a beach that has been officially closed to access since 2006 due to falling rocks and unstable cliffs. The closure and a half-hour walk does not deter many visitors looking to enjoy its more remote location and do so at their own risk.

So these measures have been taken as part of the policies undertaken by the local government to promote the rational and sustainable use of natural tourism resources which have include the banning of motor vessels such as jet skis entering protected sea caves, the campaign against illegal fishing and installing special buoys for use by divers.

Earlier this week police engaged in routine surveillance surprised two men who were fishing illegally in the marine reserve of Cap de Sant Antoni. The two Frenchmen were caught diving for fish from a boat within the protected zone. Police seized all gear including harpoon guns, wetsuits and buoys and have started prosecution proceedings. Sport fishing is prohibited within the marine reserve, part of the Parque Natural del Montgó, whilst illegal fishing in all areas adversely affects the seabed and the illegal sale of fish is an activity which affects the regulated fishing trade.
