Work has been completed on the renovation of the iconic blue dome of the chapel of Calvario, the building which has housed the town's treasured image of Jesús Nazareno since its construction in the mid-19th century. The project, carried out on behalf of the Ayuntamiento de Xàbia over the past four months, aims to help solve the problem of damp in the property and has revitalised the characteristic blue-tiled dome. It has also included the cleaning up of the roof to seal existing leaks as well as opened up a series of small windows which had been blocked up to provide more natural light into the interior of the chapel.

The work has been completed with a budget of 75,000 euros by a firm which specialises in the renovation of historic buildings and required the installation of a complex system of scaffolding. Councillor Paco Torres (Urban Planning) and mayor José Chulvi, accompanied by municipal technicians, visited the chapel to inspect the work as complete and to verify its success.

This project forms part of a series of initiatives by the Ayuntamiento de Xàbia to improve muncipal heritage. The chapel of Calvario is the only one of the six chapels built in the 18th century which is municipal property (two has long deen demolished whilst the other four are privately-owned: Sant Antoni in Benitzaina, Sant Hermanegild and Sant Martí in Cap Martí, San Sebastià in Rebaldí and Sant Juame in els Julians). The iconic blue-domed chapel, built between 1849 and 1857, replaced an original building that was built in 1770 to house the image of Jesús Nazareno.
