Users of the Centro de Día de Xàbia, the day centre located off the Plaza de la Constitución, will be benefiting from a special project involving dogs to help improve their health over the next few months, thanks to social funding provided by Obra Social La Caixa. Trained animals will be helping with the therapeutic sessions which will be organised by Asiscan, a local association of experts in animal-assisted therapy which aims to improve the quality of life of people, especially those suffering from any disability, social disorder or exclusion problems.

Councillor Pepa Gisbert (Social Services) launched the project with the managers of the three La Caixa branches in Xàbia at the centre with the team, both human and animals, which will start next week to introduce these therapies consisting of two sessions per week, one focused on the cognitive side and the other on the emotional.

The councillor explained when La Caixa offered a grant of 10,000 euros to Ayuntamiento de Xàbia for a social project, these sort of therapies sprang to mind, sessions will be pioneering in the Marina Alta region and whose benefits have been proven in older people. It has been found that the presence of dogs improves the mood and has beneficial effects against loneliness. In addition, interacting with a pet, for example through stroking, can promote a state of peace and tranquility in people and in the case of older people suffering from dementia who cannot communicate normally with other people, they can connect with reality by communicating with the dogs.
