Details have been released for the third edition of the municipal social employment plan which provides temporary work for the long-term unemployed in Xabia. Mayor Jose Chulvi, accompanied by councillors Pepa Gisbert (Social Services), Doris Courcelles (Environment) and Kika Mata (Services), explained that the project, the first in the current legislature, will offer thirty positions consisting of 24 labourers and 6 foremen divided into six teams which, over the next few months, will reinforce the municipal brigades responsible for the cleaning of riverbeds, gulleys, forestry areas and public tracks.
The social employment plan focuses its selection criteria on social status and particular on those residents of Xabia who bear a limited economic situation, who don't have the advantage of benefits payments, and those who urgently need to incorporate themselves back into the labour market.
Mayor Chulvi explained that the main objective of this project is to distribute the temporary staff over three shifts, each lasting three months, which will extend until almost the start of next summer and consequently cover periods with distinct needs such as the clearing of areas liable to flooding and the prevention of fire in forestry areas.
From Wednesday 20th September the 20-day application period will be opened and those wishing to be considered for employment through this plan should present their applications at the Oficina de Atencion de Ciudadanos (OAC) at the municipal offices in Portal de Clot, Avenida Amanecer, 2. The application requirements will be available to view on the municipal website www.ajxabia.com.
The project benefits from a budget of 203,000 euros, the funding coming from staff reductions and the salary of the mayor which Jose Chulvi has waived ever since becoming the head of the council in 2011. The successful applicants will be offered a three-month employment contract with a salary equal to that of full-time municipal employees.
To be eligible for employment within this plan, there are a number of requisites that would need to be met by the applicant including proof of residency in Xabia of a minimum of one year through the production of a padron certificate, to be unemployed at the time of application. Each case will be considered by officials from the Department of Social Services who will be responsible for the selection of the successful applicants.
The mayor emphasised that this type of employment project which has been pioneered by Xabia serves a dual-purpose; it not only benefits those families in the municipality who have been suffering economic problems by offering short-term employment but also benefits the residents of the town through the improvement of public spaces with municipal brigades responsible for forestry work in La Granadella, the clearing and cleaning of streets and rural roads, the maintenance of riverbeds and gulleys as well as the restoration of green zones and plots amongst others.
