javeamigos.com | JAVEA PREPARES FOR SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY INITIATIVE

Jávea has been preparing a comprehensive programme of activities to celebrate the inaugural Sustainable Transport Week between September 16th and 22nd which forms part of a commitment to a European project to promote the use of clean energy for transport, an initiative that the town has recently joined. Councillor Juan Luis Cardona (Sports) has explained that many associations and individuals have been involved in the preparation for the inaugural event, including the Department of Transport, Department of Tourism and Department of the Environment, who have prepared a schedule of lectures, workshops and eco-tours. With the opening of the new bus station, mayor José Chulvi expects the use of public transport to increase and revealed that Autocares Venturo which runs the local bus service will provide a free service on Monday 16th September.

The programme opens on Monday and Tuesday with special lectures about sustainable transport in the municipal schools before the first organised bike ride on Tuesday afternoon at 4.30pm offered by Gurugú Bicicletes. The following evening, Xàbia's Bike will offer a night ride for cyclists leaving at 8.30pm from their shop in the port and on Thursday 19th September at 4.30pm there will be another bike ride organised by Gurugú Bicicletes. Both shops will be able to provide bicycles free of charge for those who don't own one and pre-reserve, subject to availability.

On Friday 20th September there will be a non-competitive evening foot-race between the port and the Arenal beach - and back again - while on Saturday 21st September, the people at Gurugú Bicicletes and Xabia's Bikes will once again be offering organised bike rides with the former offering guided rides for those with a low to medium cycling ability. Also on Saturday, there will be a guided walk offered by the Department of Tourism which will depart from the Tourist Office in the historic centre at 5.00pm and climb up to the iconic windmills of La Plana and back again. There is another guided walk on Sunday 22nd September which departs from the Arenal beach at 4.00pm and passes through the wonderful viewpoints of Cala Blanca, Caletes and Portitxol. Those interested in taking part in these two walks should pre-register at any of the tourist offices or call 96 579 43 56.

The week concludes on Sunday 22nd September with the first ever "car free day" in Jávea when the Avenida Mediterraneo which be closed to traffic from Calle Bolonia to the Hotel Solymar and the section will host a series activities during the day including demonstrations of electric vehicles, bicycle workshops, lectures about car-sharing as well as skating and skateboarding workshops. In addition, there will also be dog-walking organised by APASA which will leave from Jávea Park at 11.00am and walk to the port and back.

The town hall has outlined several initiatives which promote sustainable transport including the recent introduction of new bicycle parking zones as well as the re-painting of the cycling paths. And during its presentation about the inaugural week, it revealed its theme for the initiative entitled "La ciudad sin mi coche. Muévete por un aire más limpio" - The town without my car. Move through cleaner air."
