Valencia's special day also sees annual prize-giving ceremony at the town hall

Tuesday 1st October 2013

Councillor Empar Bolufer (Culture) has revealed the schedule of events through which Jávea will celebrate October 9th - el Día de la Comunidad Valenciana - and they include the long-awaited official opening of the new library and community centre in the port area of town. Bolufer confirmed that the activities in honour of "such an important date for Valencianos" start on Wednesday 2nd October with a series of concerts by the Marina Alta's Youth Orchestra at the historic church of San Bartolomé and conclude on Friday 11th October with a special performance by the Centre Artístic Musical de Xàbia together with the Associació Musical de El Verger at the same venue right in the heart of the old quarter of Jávea.

On Friday 4th October at 8.00pm, there will be a lecture by María Dolores Mas Badia, civil rights lecturer at the Universitat de València, who will be speaking about matrimonial law in the Valencian Community.

On Tuesday 8th October, the new library at Avda. Botànic Cabanilles in the port will be officially opened and councillor Bolufer confirmed the delight to be able to finally open its doors to the public after considerable delay due to technical reasons. "The library is something that is much needed in the port and as well as the residents of the area, it will also serve those living in the Arenal and the urbanisations," said the councillor who said that the building had been in high demand from residents. She also confirmed that the facility will provide two functions with the ground floor and two upper floors hosting the library with a records and audiovisual area, computers and a children's area along with a reading room and an area dedicated to foreign language publications. The basement of the building will serve as a community centre for senior citizens with two rooms, one of which will be large enough to hold dances and other activities. That evening, after the inauguration of the new building, there will be a concert of traditional Valencian music by local group La Romàntica del Saladar at 8.00pm at the Casa del Cultura in Plaça del Baix in the historic centre.

And on Wednesday 9th October - the special holiday for all Valencianos - the town hall will be holding its traditional prize-giving ceremony - los Premis Vila de Xàbia - which celebrates its 18th edition at 11.30pm at the town hall chambers. Recipients of this year's honours are the Intersociedad de Vecinos Hispanófilos (ISVH), an neighbourhood organisation formed by residents of the Cabo de la Nao who are being recognised for their charity work and care activities which contribute to the welfare of the most disadvantaged families in town, and Paco Reus Boyd-Swan, who receives the Civic Values award for his dedication to teaching and is currently a lecturer at the Centro Asociado de la UNED in Dénia. The prize-giving will be followed by traditional dancing and music in the church square and Calle Major courtesy of the Grup de Danses Portitxol.

The celebrations conclude with a special free concert by the Centre Artístic Musical de Xàbia together with the Associació Musical de El Verger at the church of San Bartolomé at 10.00pm.
