LA VUELTA 2016 Ě AYUNTAMIENTO ADVISES ON POSSIBLE EFFECTS

After confirmation last February that the Stage 19 of La Vuelta de Espa˝a will start in XÓbia on Friday 9th September, the Ayuntamiento de XÓbia has been meeting with residents and business associations to discuss how the event will affect them. More than 1,500 riders and technical support staff along with more than 100 accredited journalists will be descending on the town for the individual time trial stage which will cover a 39 kilometre route from the port area of XÓbia to Calp.

A new guided tourist route has been debuted this week, joining a season of fantastic tours throughout the next few months which will be available in several languages. The new tour is entitled 'La Villa Nocturna - Vicencias del Siglo XIX' which offers a guided route around the historic centre of XÓbia after dark and is complemented by traditional Valencian dancing and sound effects.

XIRIMITAB'S CONCERT TO REMEMBER EXPULSION OF MORISCOS
Musicians from 'La Colla de Xirimiters i Tabaleters de XÓbia' have revealed details of the end of course concert, a performance that will be dedicated to one of the most powerful historical events in the Marina Alta: the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609. The group has decided to use their recital to pay tribute to "those forgotten Valencians, expelled from their lands, massacred and then put aside in the time". Moriscos were the descendants of former Muslims who converted to Christianity after Ferdinand and Isabella - los Reys Catˇlicos - outlawed the practice of Islam in the early 16th century.

Artist Milagros Lambert Kostrinksi is to be handed the keys to the city after the Ayuntamiento de XÓbia voted unanimously to appoint her as a 'Hija Predilecta' - 'favourite daughter' - in an extraordinary plenary session. The appointment will be made official at a special ceremony at the town hall this Saturday 23rd April at 12 noon, an event that the public are invited to attend. Milagros Lambert becomes the second person to be honoured in such a way after tennis player David Ferrer.

PRO-BULLY RALLY TO EXPRESS DISCONTENT AGAINST PROHIBITION
Pro-bull campaigners will be staging a demonstration in XÓbia on Sunday 1st May to show their discontent at the decision of the Ayuntamiento to prohibit the staging of the controversial 'toro embolado' and 'toro encajonado' in the municipality. Organised by the 'Asociaciˇn Cultural Taurina XÓbia (ACT)', the protest is already gaining support from other such associations across the region, some of which have also seen similar prohibitions imposed, in what it being seen as a struggle to maintain as valued traditions protected by the Spanish Constituciˇn.

X└BIA EXPERIENCES A TOUCH OF SPRING CLEANING
XÓbia is experiencing a bit of a spring clean as improvement works are being carried out across the municipality, offering the best image of the town as the busy summer season approaches. Long-awaited repairs will be carried out around the indoor market in the historic centre over the next couple of months whilst pavements are already being repaired in the Arenal. The under-used Avenida Augusta is benefiting from some redevelopment, thanks to a grant from the provincial government, whilst the sports facilities at Les Mesquides and GraŘll have both seen a new lick of paint. Finally, social work brigades have carrying out clearing work as part of an ongoing fire prevention campaign.

BIG DROP IN UNEMPLOYMENT IN X└BIA IN MARCH
Unemployment in XÓbia dropped in March 2016 with 1,727 people registered as out of work, down 164 on February 2016, the biggest drop on record. The municipality had an unemployment rate of 10.17% last month, well below the average for the region. The large decrease was thanks to more opportunities available in the Services sector - bars, restaurants, hotels, retail etc. - as bars, restaurants and hotels benefited from the good Easter weather. The sector still represents just over 70% of the total unemployment in XÓbia.

Since last year, new laws have been in force in XÓbia to discourage residents from abandoning the upkeep of vacant urban plots and rural land that they own in a bid to reduce the risk of fire as well as infestations of mosquitos and rodents. However not all owners have been complying and the Ayuntamiento de XÓbia has stepped up its policy in order to force the proper maintenance of these areas of land.

Special 'Pedibus' routes are to be activated this Friday as part of its 'Pas a Pas, Camins Escolars XÓbia' initiative which promotes safe walking for primary children to and from their school, a project, developed by the Departments of Citizen Participation and of Education. A special festive programme has been prepared to honour San Francisco de Paula, the founder of the Order of Minims, which will mark the 400th anniversary of the foundation of the Convent de los MÝnimos in XÓbia. The organisers of the celebrations visited the Ayuntamiento to invite the mayor and the population of the town to enjoy the programme. The events take place this weekend - Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th April - around the Placeta del Convent in front of the chapel.

The Originals took the top prize at this year's Mirador Challenge, recording a record time of 4 hours 19 minutes to cover the 29 kilometre course, passing through all 15 of XÓbia's wonderful viewpoints located along the coast. Team Pescadilla came in second (4hrs 20m) and Team Saxo were third (4hrs 31m). Sherpas de XÓbia 2 took the Leisure top prize for the third year in a row with Happy Feet and Sherpas de XÓbia 1 in second and third respectively.

Plans have been proposed to fight the problem of illegal fishing in the municipality with restaurants and bar across XÓbia being asked not to accept fish and other seafood whose origin cannot be traced through official documentation. Poaching has been a problem that has been difficult to control along a coastline that stretches some 27 kilometres but proposals put forward by the Ayuntamiento de XÓbia aim to discourage the practice with huge fines and siezure of equipment awaiting those who continue to illegally fish our waters.

XÓbia observed a minute of silence today as a mark of respect for those affected by the terrorist attacks in Brussels on Tuesday morning, expressing its solidarity with the victims and their families. Councillor Doris Courcelles, who comes from Belgium, also read out a manifesto which condemned the massacres which killed 34 people and injured some 250 others at Brussel's Zaventem Airport and the Maalbeck underground station.

The Policiß Local will be reinforced with 12 interim officers who will reinforce the current strength of the local police force over the summer from the beginning of June until the end of September. The Ayuntamiento de XÓbia has opened up the application period for the vacancies and councillor Pepa Gisbert (Public Safety) said that the deployment of the temporary officers would help meet the greater demands caused by the increase in population during the high season and provide greater coverage of services, such as monitoring of the coast.

The municipal water company AMJASA has commemorated 'World Water Day' with an educational and awareness activity aimed at young people. Technical engineer Pascual Ladrˇn de Guevara and biologist Tere Bou visited Instituto Numero 1 in the port to give a lecture about the energy cost of producing and supply drinking water as well as the system used by AMJASA to supply more than 27,000 customers in XÓbia.
