Javier de Benito Sánchez will create the Sorolla sculpture for the port

Friday 15th October 2021 – XÀBIA AL DÍA with Mike Smith

The artist Javier de Benito Sánchez has been selected by the jury to produce the sculpture of the renown painter Joaquín Sorolla which will be placed next to the fountain in the Plaza de Adolfo Suárez in the port.

The choice was announced in the minutes published yesterday on the Public Procurement platform which recorded the opening of the bids that included the information to the author in the competition promoted by Xàbia Council to provide a 1.70-1.75m tall statue to mark the 125th anniversary of the painter’s first arrival in the town.

Last week, XAD reported that the jury was assessing two of the three proposals which had been received – one of which was ruled for a defect in the bid – and they were to decide on the best option according to different criteria and based on the theme “Jávea sublime, inmensa, lo mejor que conozco para pintar. Supera todo”.

A Google search for Javier de Benito Sánchez returns are series of links to work by the artist, mainly busts, made of iron and copper, the materials which he will have to use to create the sculpture of Sorolla.
