Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Award winning play Our Town follows two families and their children Emily Webb and George Gibbs, but it’s really about the whole community, their hopes and dreams, joy and grief, in which you are invited to share. It could be any town, anywhere, although it happens to be set in Grover’s Corners in America.

Mrs Gibbs: “It seems to me, once in your life, before you die, you ought to see a country where they don’t speak any English and they don’t even want to.” Stage Manager: “Well, I’d better show you how our town lies. Up here is Main Street, way back there is the railway station; Polish Town’s across the tracks.”

Wilder constantly reminds us of the inevitability of life passing away all too fleetingly, and that we must take our pleasures and joys in the everyday, even as we come to understand how brief our lifespan may be. One reviewer wrote: “It represents the last gasp of American lyricism in the 20th century”.

Heather Carroll, Kate Sutton and Tom Carter will perform for the first time with Jávea Players.

Heather [Julia Gibbs] fell in love with acting in secondary school and it became a lifelong passion. After three and a half years travelling the world with a theatre ministry and a brief spell with a professional Theatre-in-Education company, she moved into amateur theatre for fun, teaching languages and drama to pay the bills. Her favourite roles include Elizabeth in The Crucible, Kate Keller in All My Sons, Yelena in Uncle Vanya, and Yvette in ‘Allo, ‘Allo. She is very excited to be returning to the stage with the Jávea Players.

Kate Sutton [Mrs. Louella Soames] had wanderlust, moving from the UK to New Zealand, South Africa and now Spain. Trained as a ballerina, she worked worldwide as a professional dancer in top hotels, theatres, clubs and cruise ships for 23 years, then ran a little dance boutique in South Africa. “I also love and have been teaching yoga for 25 years, but this is my first acting part!!”

Tom Carter [Constable and Joe Stoddard] from North Carolina, spent his twenties managing and touring with a band before moving to Jávea with his wife. He enjoys cycling, music, hiking, history, friends, film, and being in the sea.

The Jávea Players’ production will be performed from 29th October to 1st November [matinée and evening performances on the Saturday] at the Unión Musical in Gata de Gorgos. Tickets: €15, Gala Night €20 Cava and canapés after the show. See website https://javeaplayers.com/ for further details.
