Thursday 5th August 2021 – PRESS RELEASE with Mike Smith

The average occupancy forecast for the hotels on the coast of the Comunidad Valenciana during the month of August stands at 65.8%, 26.5% more than in 2020, according to the Summer Season Occupation Survey carried out this week by Turisme Comunitat Valenciana, who polled a representative sample of establishments from the three provinces.

The regional secretary for Tourism, Francesc Colomer, explained that “August has started with an average of two out of three hotel beds occupied and everything seems to indicate, if the health situation allows us, to reach 75% occupancy with last minute tourist reservations, even 80% in some specific points“.

Colomer added that “we are concerned that there is still one out of every four tourist accommodation places closed“, although – in general terms – the Communidad Valenciana has around 75-80% of the tourist accommodation places open, so the “commitment of the Generalitat is to be able to open all the regulated accommodation of the Comunidad Valenciana“.

The head of regional tourism made his comments in Altea, where he has signed a collaboration agreement with the mayor of the town, Jaume Llinares, for the development of marketing and tourism promotional activities in the municipality for which Turisme Comunitat Valenciana will allocate 50,000 euros.

During his speech, Colomer said that “the month of July has been a dynamic month in a year of transition and gradual recovery“, and stressed that “profitability has been above the national average“. He added that “2021 has been a complex year, in which negative news has tended to discourage the tourist from travelling,” but despite this situation, “the Comunidad Valenciana has resisted and manages to continue to attract visitors, thanks to its ability to build loyalty“.

However he has recognized that “international tourism continues to be complex“, while pointing out that “national tourism has evolved and has compensated in a certain part, the fall of the international market“.

That said, Colomer has insisted that “it is not only about counting tourists; a full beach is not the picture that we want to chronicle, we want to advance in the transformation of the sustainable tourism model“.

And, although he always aims to be prudent with data and forecasts, Colomer thanked the Comunidad Valenciana tourism sector for the effort made, emphasizing that “the objective is that, in a gradual way, we re-open our tourist potential“.
