On the night of June 23rd, Xàbia comes alive as thousands pack into the narrow streets of the historic centre for Nit dels Focs, a spectacular midsummer celebration. At the heart of the tradition is fire-jumping, an age-old ritual where the brave leap through flames in a symbolic act of cleansing. Last year, the event attracted an estimated 17,500 participants and so to ensure the night remains both thrilling and safe, the local police have shared a series of essential safety tips for all attendees.

Before Jumping

  • Assess the Bonfire: Not all bonfires are suitable for jumping. Make sure it’s a manageable size.
  • Safe Space: Make sure there’s enough space around the bonfire to land safely without colliding with other people or objects.
  • Appropriate Footwear: Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes that protect you from the heat and potential embers. Avoid sandals or going barefoot.
  • Appropriate Clothing: Choose clothing made of cotton or natural materials that don’t ignite easily. Avoid synthetic fabrics that can melt and cause burns. Tight-fitting clothing is preferable to avoid snagging.
  • No Loose Items: Make sure you don’t carry anything that could fall or get tangled while jumping, such as large necklaces or backpacks.
  • Follow the recommendations of Safety and Emergency personnel.

During The Jump

  • Safe Distance: Stay a safe distance from the fire while you wait for your turn.
  • Wait your turn and make sure the space is clear. Fires can only be jumped in one direction.
  • Sufficient Momentum: Build up the momentum needed to safely jump over the flames. Don’t attempt a jump that’s too short and leaves you mid-air.
  • Controlled Landing: Make sure you land with balance to avoid falls or twists.
  • Alcohol and Jumping Don’t Mix: Avoid jumping if you’ve consumed too much alcohol. Your reflexes and judgment will be impaired, increasing the risk of accidents.
  • Attention to Children: If children are present, supervise them constantly and explain the dangers of getting too close to the fire. It’s best for children to jump over very small fires and always under the supervision of a responsible adult.

After Jumping

  • Check your clothing and skin: Quickly check your clothing and skin for sparks or minor burns.
  • Basic first aid: There is a medical service at all bonfires. If you need one, ask any member of the Safety and Emergency team.
