JAVEA moved back into second spot, a point behind leaders
Orihuela CF "B" with a game in hand after
a battling 1-1 draw at CD Almoradi. "We wuz robbed",
was the cry on the coach home as the rojiblancos
came to within a few minutes of picking up maximum points
from an extremely dull game before a decidedly
dodgy penalty award meant that the teams had to settle
for a share of spoils. Perhaps it was a fair result
to reflect the superb camaraderie generated between
the two sets of supporters before, during and after
the match. It's just a shame that a great day out was
spoiled by a poor football match!
The JAVEAMIGOS
travelled down to the Vega Baja en masse to join
with their friends from the Almoradi Amigos in some
pre-match entertainment. (See our special picture section
coming soon.) A reception with the mayor in the town
hall was followed by a delicious barbecue in the street
outside TC's Bar, the headquarters of the Almoradi Amigos,
during which we are pleased to report that the JAVEAMIGOS
avenged the sorry defeat of last season by winning the
darts tournament. Old friendships were renewed, new
friendships were forged and we have got a lot of live
up to when the Almoradi Amigos visit us next February.
The pre-match
hospitality had oiled the voices sufficiently enough
to create a great atmosphere in an otherwise characterless
football ground. With the only stand seperated from
the pitch by a running track, it was hard to get involved
in the football game at times, especially since the
football was far from entertaining. Javea started the
stronger of the two sides but too many passes went astray,
too many players took the wrong option when easier ones
would have eased open the home defence. Ginger-haired
Pablo dominated the midfield, chasing down loose balls
and lost causes whilst some of his team-mates ran with
apparent disinterest. Carlo was having a torrid time
down the right-flank, finding himself in the wrong position
on too many occasions as his midfield looked to try
and open an option down that side. Eventually they would
look elsewhere and Carlo was understandably substituted
at half-time, his contribution to the match snuffed
out by a decent bit of homework from the hosts.
Almoradi's Abel
proved to be handful for the rojiblancos just
as he did last season when he turned out for CD Thader
and before that for Crevillente Deportivo. Both sides
now play in the Third Division; Abel remains in the
Preferente. But for a ridiculous portfolio of theatrics,
he might be playing football at higher level these days
as he gradually exposed Javea's left flank. However
his insistence at throwing himself to the floor at the
merest hint of contact didn't find him many friends
amongst the travelling contingent and unfortunately,
much like his previous incarnations, he led the
way for the tempo of the rest of the game. A succession
of Almoradi players flung themselves to the surface
in dramatic style; the virus spread to the visitors
as some of the rojiblancos resorted to similar
tactics and both sets of fans expressed their discontentment.
Chances were few and far between; any shots were well
wide of the goal or so high that they threatened to
land in nearby Catral. Tempers frayed quickly and the
referee found himself reaching for his notebook with
depressing regularity before calling a temporary halt
to the proceedings for half-time. As the players reached
the changing rooms on the far side of the pitch, brief
scuffles broke out between the two sides; it promised
to be an interesting second period.
It's always annoying
when promises are broken. The players emerged from their
half-time briefs to continue their theatrics. The fans
decided to entertain themselves with some singing, a
little bit of dancing and perhaps a few beers. Javea
still looked on top of things when they managed to pass
the ball around but, once again, too many passes went
astray, picked up by eager opposition who grew a little
more confident as the game progressed. And then Javea
finally broke the deadlock just when it looked as if
the game might stumble to a goalless conclusion. A ball
was crossed into the box and Almoradi failed to
clear the loose ball before Puncho finally swiped the
ball into the back of the net to the delight of the
large travelling army.
However the drama
was not over. Almoradi poured forward as the Javea fans
continued to celebrate in the stands and a player once
again threw himself to the floor in such dramatic fashion
that the referee appeared not to have been taken in
by such blatent diving. However his assistant on the
near side thought differently and, surrounded by a mass
of home players, he engaged in a long debate with the
referee, both decided to signal a penalty kick
much to the dismay of the travelling contingent. Almoradi
calmly stroked the ball past the out-stretched arms
on Ortola and the game was brought back to level terms.
Both sides went out for grab the winner and, but for
a bit of composure in front of goal, either side could
have nicked it. Almoradi finished as the stronger side
and you sensed that the rojiblancos were thankful
for the final whistle.
