Javea dragged their season back on track with victory
over local rivals Calpe CF. Granted, it was a less-than-stimulating
encounter spoiled by a lack of potency in front of goal
by the home side. With a little more composure - and
perhaps luck - struggling Calpe might have been on end
of another rout similar to the one they suffered
at home back in November when the rojiblancos took
advantage of a club in chaos and romped home by
three easy goals. But, after three successive defeats,
the most important target for the side was to claim
maximum points against a side struggling to avoid relegation
and they managed to do so thanks to goals from Alex
Cuadrado (right) and Puncho.
The
rojiblancos took to the field led by skipper
Juanma and mascot Elliot who proudly bounced onto the
pitch resplendent in matching kit. The youngster enthusiasm
seemed to rub off on the players as they began to find
their feet very quickly against an extremely poor side
from Calpe. And it wasn't long before the home side
took the lead after a succession of attacks through
a porous defence eventually saw Alex Cuadrado loop the
ball over his shoulder - a marvellous 'chilena' - to
put the rojiblancos into the expected lead.
However
Javea failed to build on the early opener and, although
Calpe CF remain by far the poorest side that
the rojiblancos have faced this season, they
couldn't kill off the opponent and the pessimists in
the crowd of around 500 felt that an equaliser was always
looking more likely. It's not that Javea played particularly
badly; it wasn't the best performance of the season
but it certainly wasn't the worst. Puncho tried as hard
as ever to carve open the defence and double the advantage
but his work-rate wasn't reciprocated by some of his
team-mates.
The
second-half brought little change as Calpe ran themselves
into the ground to defend their goal. Goalkeeper Bauza
didn't have a great deal to do during the second period
although the visitors had their moments and the pessimists
were almost proved right. However a sustained period
of pressure eventually produced a second goal after
77 minutes when some excellent work from Javi allowed
Puncho to fire in off the left-hand post to score his
seventh goal of the season and more or less assure the
rojiblancos of maximum points.
With
seconds remaining, victory was somewhat tempered by
a horrific injury to Calpe's Bricio who fell awkwardly
in the centre of the park and snapped his right arm
just above the wrist. The crowd soon realised the nature
of the injury from the reaction of players from
both sides and Bricio was afforded a standing ovation
from everyone in the ground as he was stretchered into
a waiting ambulance and rushed to hospital. We all hope
he makes a speedy recovery.
