ROJIBLANCOS
END MISERABLE RUN Match
Report by Mike Smith
CD
JÁVEA ended a run of five games without a win, thanks
to a late goal from substitute Enrique against nine-man
FC Jove Español San Vicente "B". It had been
a long time coming - at least it certainly felt like
it at times - but the first win since the end of
November eases open the gap between the rojiblancos
and the wrong end of the table. A top-half finish would
be a remarkable result after all the turmoil that the
club has suffered this season but if the players continue
to show the same 'will-to-win' attitude that they
have demonstrated both here and last weekend at Horadada
then thoughts of relegation, however unlikely that
may be, can be firmly dispelled.
Despite
still missing injured top-scorer David Ivars, coach
José Luís was once again able to name one of his strongest
sides for some time with Onieva clearly up to adding
to his season's tally after a morale-boosting goal against
Horadada last weekend. Yet it was the visitors, also
struggling for points, who would dictate the opening
few minutes of the game, forcing an early corner that
would ultimately come to nothing before the tenacious
Garka fired a long-range effort just wide of the right-hand
upright.
And
they might have taken the lead after 10 minutes when
a nervous-looking Femenía attempted a back-pass to Ortolà
but underhit the ball, allowing Ádrian to whip past
him and claim it but his attempted chip over the
advancing keeper fell well wide of the left post, much
to the relief of the home fans who had braved the damp
and cold to take advantage of free entry to the game.
Jove
Español B took confidence from their opening domination
and had another chance to open the scoring when Serna
fired a long-range free-kick low through a crowded
area which forced Ortolà to leap across his goal and
dive quickly to his left to block the shot.
On
the quarter-hour mark, Jávea almost got the break that
they really wouldn't have deserved when Femenía finally
lifted a free-kick above head height which looped over
the defence to the far side of the area where Onieva
stuck out a hopeful leg to divert the ball into the
net. But the celebration were premature as the
linesman quickly raised his flag for what he determined
to be an offside offence. It must have been a tight
decision for Jávea protested with collective fury
and Onieva was booked for howling just a little too
much for the referee.
A minute
later it was Dino, restored to his preferred right midfield
slot, who would go close with a rushed effort from the
edge of the box after collecting a superb pass across
the pitch from Pablo but he sliced his shot well
wide under pressure.
Jávea
started to take control of the game and forced a succession
of corners with Dino once again going close
with an effort from distance after some good work from
Duque. Minutes later Onieva saw his powerful header
deflected by a defender into the arms of a very grateful
keeper and it looked as if it would only be a matter
of time before the home side took the lead.
But
Jove Español refused to concede and might have claimed
first blood themselves when Garka connected superbly
with a fine cross from Toni but the header was firmly
blocked by Ortolà's expending frame right on the line,
a reflex save that drew deserved applause.
And
then, on 33 minutes, Jávea were handed a golden opportunity
to open the scoring when Duque was savagely hacked down
inside the area by the gigantic centre-half Gaby,
who looked incredibly bemused at the referee's decision to
point to the penalty spot. With usual penalty taker
David Ivars having to watch from the stands, midfielder
Valentín placed the ball on the spot; he had despatched
a quality penalty against Algueña so the confidence
was there that he would do so again. Yet, instead of
cooly pushing the ball wide as he did a fortnight ago, he
chose to smash the ball down the centre and goalkeeper
Zozano was fortunate that his legs blocked the effort.
On
the stroke of half-time, as Jove Español were once again
claiming dominance over the game, the home side was
handed the advantage when Sergo was dismissed for a
second bookable offence after hauling down Dino on the
right-hand flank. Yet, as the players filed down the
tunnel at the break, fans remembered the 'advantage'
over Alfaz del Pi at the beginning of January; surely
the rojiblancos couldn't suffer the same?
The
second-half began with determination from Jávea and
Onieva struck the post with a decent shot. And then
the game threatened to turn into a drab goalless scramble
in the drizzling rain as neither side carved out any
real chances until fifteen minutes from time when Jove
Español were reduced to nine men when Jhoni was unfortunate
to receive a second yellow for a tame tackle in the
centre of the park.
Four
minutes later the rojiblancos finally took advantage
of their numerical superiority when substitute Enrique,
making his debut for the senior squad and becoming the
club's 37th player of the season, smashed home from
15 yards, the ball nestling in the back of the net just
inside the left-hand post. And it should have been more
when Valentín made an attempt from distance but he should
have done lot better with an effort that dropped well
wide of the goal.
With
Jove Español mounting a late attempt to salvage a share
of the spoils, the referee brought the game to a close
and Jávea claimed their first maximum points haul
for six games with a decent performance.
