MATCH REPORT 2009-10
Jor 16 : CD Javea 0-1 CF Alfaz del Pi
Sunday 3rd January 2010, 4.30pm

JAVEA STUMBLE AGAINST NINE-MAN ALFAZ DEL PI
Match Report by Mike Smith

CF Alfaz del Pi arrived at the Campo d’Esports boasting a record of just three wins all season and one of the worst away records in the group. However Javea had won just twice in front of their own fans and a win was far from a foregone conclusion.

Former player Pablo Calderon, the ginger-haired assassin, gave early notice of the visitor´s intention to take the game to their hosts with a well-taken half-volley from 20 yards which seriously tested goalkeeper Ortolá after just four minutes. Pablo had received a rousing welcome from the Javeamigos gathered at the back of the stand who appreciated his passion for winning during his spell with CD Javea and he purposefully returned the salute with an acknowledging wave just before kick-off. His return to Javea would be a memorable one.

Javea looked ragged once again during the opening minutes of the game . The unknown Dani, making his debut for the club in a forward role, became the 35th player to make an appearance for CD Javea this season. And that´s in just 16 games, less than half of the season. Such a conveyor belt of players makes it almost impossible to field a consistent, strong starting line-up and this continues to hamper attempts to recover a club´s confidence both on and off the pitch.

Teams seek out such weaknesses and Alfaz del Pi, struggling at the wrong end of the table, apparently found the chinks in the armour with increasing ease. On the quarter hour mark, Carrasco charged down the right-hand flank almost unchallenged before lifting a terrific cross into the box which striker Hugo nodded powerfully across the face of the goal with Ortolá stranded but the effort shaved a few millimetres of paint from the outside of the left-hand upright and smashed noisily into the fencing behind the goal.

A light-weight Javea side lacked invention across the park and found it increasingly difficult to prise open the visiting defence. So it was Alfaz del Pi who controlled much of the game and should have gone ahead in the 34th minute when Raúl smashed his effort against the post as the Javea defence ran aimlessly around the penalty area. Two minutes later the normally-reliable Yousso sliced an attempted clearance back towards the goal and one just knew that it was going to be one of those games.

Yet just before half-time the rojiblancos were handed an advantage when Alfaz del Pi were reduced to nine man when Pablo and Ivan were sent off. The former was incensed by the decision and had to be restrained by team-mates before storming noisily into the tunnel. However it would not be the home team which would be motivated by the dismissals.

Six minutes into the second-half and Raul charged into the area to smash the ball past Ortolá and put Alfaz del Pi into what on paper would have been an unlikely lead but on their performance on the day proved to be thoroughly deserved.  Yet still javea found it difficult to find a way back into the game. Coach Jose Luis tried a re-shuffle, bringing on young Pablo for the ineffective Grimalt and then Juan Onieva for defender Femenía but Alfaz were still allowed to control the game and Raul should have doubled their advantage ten minutes from time but sliced his effort wide.

As if things could not get any worse, David Ivars limped painfully from the pitch, his ankle swelling up as he lay disconsolate on the side of the pitch. He was to play no further part in the game but Javea had used all four subs and were therefore trying to prise open an equaliser  with just ten men - although this was still an advantage over Alfaz del Pi ... although you would never have guessed that the rojiblancos had been playing with a TWO man advantage for much of the second-half.

But the rojiblancos did apply a little pressure - just a little too late - as the minutes ticked away at the end of the game. Pablo, ever keen to increase his goal tally, went close on 90 minutes with Javea´s second shot on target all game whilst Yousso might have done better with a snatched shot from distance. But Alfaz held on to claim only their second win away from hime all season and keep their first clean sheet of the season.
