JAVEA
SUFFERS AWFUL OFFICIALS IN LOCAL DERBY Report
by Mike Smith
Sr. Fernandez
Vidal and his fresh-faced linesmen left the field of
play to a multi-lingual chorus questioning their
honesty after a truly pathetic performance allowed
UD Benissa to snatch victory in the Marina Alta
derby. Up until the dismissal of hard-working midfielder
Youssoupha, the young patched-up rojiblancos were more
than a match for a side that looked far from promotion
candidates. But it was only after Javea were reduced
to ten men that the journeymen bruisers from Benissa
found advantage to barge their way to victory,
helped no end by a succession of poor and bizarre decisions
from the officials that produced little seasonal cheer
amongst the large contingent of away fans. With leading
striker David Ivars limping off with a knee injury late
in the second-half, the day ended miserably in the pouring
rain.
As
injuries continued to ravage the side, coach José Luis
was forced to hand two more senior debuts in Wilson
at right-back and the slightly more experienced
Femenía in the centre of defence to hold strong a otherwise
teenage back-line. Up front, Sergio Grimalt claimed
his first start of the season in place of the missing
Alex Mata. It's only 14 games into the season and already
the club have been forced to use 33 players to
patch up the side.
The
game started well for Javea in the pouring rain with
plenty of early pressure from the rojiblancos which
tested very effectively the ability of their supposedly
more illustrious hosts. However the referee was quick
to get into the game by booking young centre-half Juanme
for a most innocuous looking challenge on an opponent
who went down far too easily yet deceived the official.
The incident would set the tone for the rest of the
game.
The
first real attempt of the game came on the quarter hour
mark when a powerful 35 yard effort from Benissa's
Raúl forced goalkeeper Ortolá into a trademark "one-for-the-cameras"
save at full-stretch to push the ball around the left-hand
upright. At the other end, it was Onieva, desperate
to get himself back on the scoresheet, who might have opened
the account for the rojiblancos, although his attempted
lob from outside of the area was purely speculative,
having spotted the keeper just a few yards off
his line.
On
the half-hour mark Benissa's journeyman striker Senior
missed an absolute sitter from close range when he failed
to connect properly with a searching cross from
Toni Jiménez, the open goal yawning wide in front of
him, and nodded the ball wide of the goal to ironic
cheers from the travelling support. A few minutes later,
Youssoupha was harshly booked for handball in the centre
of the park, the referee having missed a number of more
obvious offences in the preceding few minutes; it would
be a fateful booking for the tenacious midfielder.
The
second-half brought drama from the very beginning. Benissa's
Auriña went close, firing his attempt from ten yards
just over bar after meeting another good cross from Toni
Jiménez. As the hosts looked to apply the pressure on
the rojiblancos, they won a throw-in on the right-hand
side. As they tried to take a quick throw, Youssoupha
inexplicably raised his hands to block the flight of
the ball and was quite rightly booked. However his ridiculous caution
late in the first half meant that the referee had no
option but to send off the player and Youssoupha walked
tearfully towards the changing room knowing full well
that Benissa had been handed an unfortunate advantage.
Tempers
rose and frustration spilled over as Duque was booked
for a tame challenge on another Benissa player who fell
to dramatically to the ground in all to easy fashion,
deceiving the referee into cautioning a player. Minutes
later coach José Luis was sent to the stands after David
Ivars was bundled off the ball in the area for a clear
penalty, the appeals of the travelling fans almost raising
the roof of the small stand.
Midway
through the half, Benissa got themselves onto the scoresheet
when Marc smashed home from close range, leaving goalkeeper
Ortolá with little chance. They got the break they needed
and they knew it. A couple of minutes later another
Benissa player collapsed in mock agony to the ground
under a challenge from David Ivars and the striker was
booked to add to a lengthening list of unnecessary cautions
in the referee's notebook.
As
the game drew to a close, Javea might have equalised
when substitute Valentin fired a free-kick just wide
of the left post from just outside the area. However
Benissa put the game beyond doubt when Senior finally
found the target, meeting a cross from a team-mate who
collected a pass in a clear offside position and
Ortolá joined his colleagues in the referee's notebook.
And
so, the game ended with Javea's sixth successive defeat
at Benissa. Whilst the travelling fans applauded their
young side from the pitch, giving their appreciation
for battling on against all odds, including driving
rain and awful officials, they left their last words
for the referee and his officials. It's safe to say
that they won't be receiving many Christmas cards from
Javea ...
