DETERMINATION
WINS THE DAY FOR JAVEA Report
by Mike Smith
After
last weekend's stunning victory over Mutxamel CF, the
youngsters of CD Javea pulled another rabbit out of
the hat with a determined home performance to secure
maximum points against top-three side Santa Pola CF.
After a goal-less first half, Javea opened the scoring
through a penalty from David Ivars, only to concede
an equaliser when substitute Miralles was allowed to
convert a corner kick at the near post. However
the rojiblancos resolutely drove forward and the
determined Pablo was rewarded for all his hard
work with a stunning headed winner seven minutes
from time and secure CD Javea's first win at home since
September.
The
weather was cloudy and damp but some determined efforts
to maximise attendances, which included a new low admission
price, meant that there were a good number of fans
braving the elements and ready to give the rojiblancos
their support against some tough opposition from the
top of the table. Santa Pola CF made the long journey
north still buzzing after their stunning 4-3 win over
UD Benissa the previous weekend which lifted them into
the top three. However CD Javea had the victory over
Mutxamel to build on and the same determination and
confidence shown in that 3-1 win would be massively
important.
Javea
showed early promise when young striker Mata tested
Julio with a low difficult shot that the visiting
keeper did well to push away for a corner. Much like
the previous weekend, the rojiblancos forced an early
succession of corners but couldn't quite find the finishing
touch to open the scoring. A few minutes later Javier
Pomares might have done better with a chipped effort
from a tight angle which eluded Ortolá but landed harmlessly
on top of the net. The custodian would have little else
to do in the opening half of the game as his young defence
performed admirably, helped no end by the characteristic
determination of Youssoupha, playing just in front of
the back four. The first half ended 0-0, a forgettable
45 minutes of football as both sides cancelled each
other out in the middle third of the pitch.
The
second period began like the first with Javea almost
taking the lead but Mata was unable to connect with
a long free-kick into the box from Dino. And then,
on the hour-mark, David Ivars charged into the area on
the far right-hand side and was unceremoniously
hauled down by Marineros defender Vicente. The captain
picked himself up to take the resulting penalty kick,
slotting the ball home into the bottom right-hand corner;
the strike was inch perfect for the celebrations in
the stand were somewhat muted at first as many thought
the club's leading scorer had put his effort just wide!
The
advantage was short-lived. Santa Pola drove forward
and forced a corner-kick from which Pomares floated
over a perfect cross onto the head of substitute Miralles
at the near-post who nodded home despite the attention
of several home defender. A few minutes later,
Santa Pola might have taken the lead but keeper Ortolá
was able to punch away a powerful header from Hugo,
the visitor's last real effort on goal.
The
rojiblancos pushed forward in their search for a winner,
with Pablo causing all sorts of problems for the visiting
defence. He would eventually be rewarded for his efforts
seven minutes from time when he rose above the Marineros
defence to meet a fine cross from Duque, heading the
ball across the face of the goal and beyond the reach
of Julio to hit the inside of the far post and
score.
Javea
absorbed some late pressure from Santa Pola, running
down the clock to secure their first victory at home
since the 4-0 win over Albatera CF back in September
and move to within five points of the play-offs.
