JAVEA ended their season in disappointing
style, crashing to heavy defeat to UD Tavernes on
a warm evening amongst the mountains.
Tavernes
had the spectre of relegation hanging over
them and a fair amount of tub-thumping had
brought out the locals to support their
side to the victory that would assure them
of survival. The Municipal Stadium is a
real sporting oasis, hidden away behind
the rows of hi-rise condominiums with the
tree-covered mountains providing a pleasant
backdrop. Some 800 fans turned out, filling
the covered main stand and lining the other
three sides to provide noisy encouragement
from all sides.
Javea
took control of the game early and made
Tavernes do much of the work until Víctor
tested the rojiblanco defence with a fine
header from a corner after 11 minutes and
the game leant in the favour of the hosts.
Víctor was involved in the home side's
next attack when he fired low from the edge
of the box, an attempt that appeared to
be safely collected by Ortolá but he made
a mess of it and the ball bounced free towards
the goal-line before the young keeper was
able to fall on top of it inches from the
line.
Javea
needed to get themselves back in the game
and just before the half-hour mark an excellent
ball through the middle from Javi was
chased by Onieva but the forward was hauled
back by Edú and
Tavernes conceded a free-kick on the edge
of the box. Dani and Carbonell lined up
to take the kick, the former eventually
firing over the wall but his fine effort
was tipped over the bar by Iván.
A
few minutes later David Ivars was fouled
cloe to the right-hand corner post and his
subsequent free-kick was floated well into
the box but Scott's header was well blocked
by the keeper. And then Onieva had a great
chance to put Javea ahead after some great
work from David Ivars but Tavernes keeper
Iván pulled off a wonder save to deny Javea's
leading striker.
The
game ebbed back into the hands of Tavernes
and Ortolá once again dropped a long-range
effort which resulted in a goal-mouth scramble
until Youssoupha managed to swing at the
loose ball and smash it back up field. The
young keeper was having a nightmare and
was found woefully out of position minutes
later but Beltrán
could only fire wide of the left post. Just
before the break former Javea striker Canet
picked up a loose ball in midfield and skipped
down the left-hand side before charging
into the box and firing low from an angle.
Juanma managed to block the attempt but
the ball bounced back into the path of Canet
who took two more steps before firing home
from 12 yards to put the home side ahead.
It was a fine individual effort, worthy
of the loud applause from everyone
in the ground.
The
second-half began as the first ended with
Canet scoring an easy goal to make
it 2-0. Tavernes really looked like a team
that wanted it more and started passing
the ball around comfortably whilst Javea
started to look jaded. Substitute Juanito,
on for Javi at the break, took Javea's first
effort of the half after 60 minutes but
his snatched shot fell just wide of the
left-hand post. The attempt seemed to spur
on the rojiblancos and Dani tried a curling
shot from distance which was palmed away
by Iván
into the path of Pablo but before the ginger
midfielder could compose himself for a shot,
the whistle was blown for a dubious handball.
Javea then forced a succession of corners
but the Tavernes defence coped well enough
to contain some tricky balls into the box
by Dani. nd then David Ivars had the last
real attempt of the game, firing low from
the edge of the box but his effort skimmed
the right-hand upright.
On
80 minutes Tavernes put the game beyond
Javea with a bizarre goal from Beltrán
who scored from distance with the keeper
and defence well out of position before
Canet completed his hat-trick four minutes
later to give the home side a comfortable
4-0 win. The result lifted them into 10th
position and ultimately well clear
of the relegation zone. With UD Oliva winning
at Picassent CF, CD Javea finished in 7th
spot.
