THE WEATHER was much better but the performance was even more miserable than the previous Sunday with CD Javea crashing to a second successive home defeat in disappointing style against CE Alberic. Fingers are beginning to be pointed and the lack of imagination in midfield is considered to be very much to blame once again. With the rojiblanco defence opting to launch the long ball game, the forward line struggled for service and rarely had options to score. On the other hand, CE Alberic, who knocked six past Torrent CF the previous weekend, handed out a lesson in football and it is one that needs to be learned very quickly to halt CD Javea's slide down the table.

After the disappointing defeat against UD Canals, coach Kenny Brown (pictured right) needed to make several changes to his matchday squad. Young striker James Lindie made his first start of the season, handed the chance to build on a promising start to his loan spell at Javea, whilst Dani stepped in to cover for the absence of Carlos Ribes on the left-hand side of midfield. On the bench, Scott waited eagerly to made his first contribution to the season.

The match started fairly even in the cool evening sunshine with both sides passing the ball around confidentally. However, as with Canals in the previous match, Alberic gradually assumed control of the centre of the park with midfielder Nestor persistently testing Dan Harvey on the right, the young Southend United defender increasingly ending up a poor second to the tricky winger. The opening goal came early and it was another defensive error that allowed Alberic to claim it. Nestor skipped around Harvey to launch a nonchalant lob into the area; centre-half Juanma should have dealt with it easily but scuffed an attempted clearance leaving goalkeeper Ortolá exposed several yards out from his goal. Alberic's Jorge pushed the ball just wide enough of the advancing custodian and it bounced towards the open goal, eventually nestling just inside the right-hand post to put the visitors into the lead after just seven minutes. A familiar sigh swept along the stand.

Heads dropped despite loud encouragement from centre-half Juan Ochando to play up for Javea. Errors continued to be made and passes misplaced so badly that you had to forgive the occasional smile from an Alberic player; it made uncomfortable viewing for the 400 or so predominantly partisan fans gathered in the twilight. Lindie and Onieva worked hard enough up front but for the most part ended up chasing long balls lobbed from deep in defence. On-loan striker Lindie was keen to add to the goal he scored on his debut but his enthusiasm and, it has to said, lack of experience almost saw him receive an unnecessary caution when he entered the field of play without the permission of the referee after re-lacing his boots on the wrong side of touchline. The Alberic bench suddenly became very animated as the youngster jogged back onto the pitch during a lull in play; the linesman called over the referee and explained to apparent infringement of the laws of the game but Sr. Pérez Galipienso wisely waved play-on. Lindie had indeed done wrong but hadn't gained any advantage and there seemed little point in cautioning him. He might not have been lucky with other referees at this level.

Javea tried desperately get back into the game but the midfield lacked any imagination in getting the ball forward through the centre of the park to provide some sort of service to the strikers. The exception was probably Dani who worked to create space on the left-hand side but his team-mates failed to capitalise on his effort and more often than not the ball ended up with the opponents. Alberic's Néstor continued to terrorise down the flanks and it seemed almost certain that they would increase their tally. However the rojiblancos managed to hang on until half-time (and it was as bad as that) and returned to the dressing room with a chance to get back into the game.

However the second half brought little respite for the loyal fans. Just before the hour-mark Iván smashed home the second goal for the visitors and there seemed little chance that Javea would get anything out of the game. Coach Kenny threw on Evaristo Pla and Juanito in place of the disappointing Manolo and tiring Lindie but nothing changed; Alberic continued to pour forward through an ineffective midfield and apply pressure to a panicky defence. Skipper Juanma, so long the rock in the defence over the previous two seasons, has looked decidedly shaky in the opening weeks of this new campaign and Juan Ochando appeared to be doing much of the clearing up as well as he could.

On 73 minutes, as home fans looked to numb their senses at the club bar, Alberic substitute Salva knocked home a third and the game was over for Javea. Two minutes later Scott made his debut for the first team, replacing Onieva, but his enthusiastic introduction failed to ignite the rojiblancos. Javea stumbled to another defeat at home, the fourth league reverse on their own soil in five games. As the final whistle sounded, passionate post-match analysis began in the stands and at the bar as disappointed home fans tried to search for answers to the problem. Has CD Javea seriously under-estimated the standard of opposition in Group III? Pre-season pundits almost confidentally predicted a top three finish; just five weeks into the season and even a spot in the top half seems like tall order.

One thing is for certain - CD Javea's limited finances means that it can't attract quality players to the club. The current squad was thought to have the passion and fight to compete, if not necessarily the skill. However the last two matches have shown quite clearly that many of them -and not just some of them - are simply not up to the job. As an ambitious club, Javea should be looking for players that can not only take Javea to promotion but can also hold their own at the next level, the Third Division. Unfortunately a small budget means that ambitions have to be limited - for the moment. A strong youth academy is commendable but most fans who turn out week-in, week-out to watch the senior team flounder on the pitch see different priorities and a winning team through which passion flows strong heads the list.

Investment in the club, whether it be through sponsorship or donation, has to be increased substantially to fill the coffers in order to build a better team. There has been plenty of talk of potential but now is the time for action. The club needs help as it made so clear in its latest weekly email: "This club is DESPERATE for supporters and businesses to step forward and contribute towards the running of the club, whether it be in the form of a socio ( essentially a season ticket holder) or by sponsoring the club in some way. If we are to push for promotion this season then we need YOUR support, so PLEASE do your bit and help us raise the money we need to make CD Javea a success!" In short, talk needs to be converted into real income. If you feel you can help the club then contact the committee either via email on info@cdjavea.com or by telephone on 902-881-099.
