A MISERABLE defeat on a miserable
wet evening. CD Javea lost their unbeaten record against a very strong UD
Canals side, who scored two goals in the second-half to claim maximum points
and confirm their status as one of the pre-season favourites. The rojiblancos simply weren’t good enough
on the day, trying to be too clever whilst the opposition played simple balls
and won the game. A hard lesson learnt on a damp September evening.
Both sides
played some good football during the first-half, passing the ball across the
damp surface with patience as they looked to open options for attack. However
it was the visitors who would make greater claim for dominance in the opening
period, going close to scoring several times as Javea began to make mistakes. At
the back skipper Juanma looked shaky from the start and
his confidence on the ball was worrying and he had to
thank his partner Juan Ochando for tidying up some decidedly
abysmal defending. On the left, Rubén Serrió played
with concerning nervousness and Canals began to utilise
this growing weakness. The
visitors should have been two goals to the good within the first half-hour but for
a combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing; they had already smashed
six past a poor Picassent side the previous weekend
and there was every danger that a continual drop in
concentration might see a similar result.
However,
the opposition didn't quite have it all their own way
and at the other end Pablo
had the best chance but headed the corner from Carlos Ribes just over the bar.
Juanito was playing his best game of the season so far
but his effort and determination would be cruelly stopped
later in the half. There should also be a special word
of mention for Dan Harvey on the right side of defence
who played like a demon possessed not only to snuff
out attacks but also help launch attacks from deep within
home territory. He had to leave the pitch midway through
the second-half after a crunching collision and the
home side was poorer for it.
The rojiblancos lost Juanito just
before half-time when the pony-tailed centre-half Munera smashed into him in
the centre of the pitch. The tanned hit-man looked to shake off the heavy
challenge but as he began to lift himself off his knees, he collapsed to the
ground clutching his face. Amazingly, considering the clash resulted in a head
injury, the referee Mayor Perez Blas allowed the game to continue until the
ball went out of play. Munera claimed innocence but didn’t quite know which
part of his body struck Juanito hard in face; was it my shoulder or perhaps
even my elbow? Just about every one else in the ground, including, it would
seem, the referee’s assistant, were sure they saw Munera lead with a fist, and
the lino called the referee over apparently to confirm this. However, Sr. Perez
Blas was having nothing take away his moment of glory, arrogantly waving away
his assistant. Juanito left the pitch on a stretcher to be rushed to the
medical centre for treatment; Munera wasn’t even showed a yellow card - he had
already been booked a few minutes before - but would
also kleave the field of play at half-time, substituted at Had he been
sent off, the final result might just have been a little
different.
The
second-half saw Canals dominate the game. Javea tried to be too clever but this
tactic didn’t work. Strikers Onieva and substitute James Lindie were left alone up front to
watch as the ball continued to get stuck and lost in midfield. An easy option
turned quickly into an attempt to ‘look good for the cameras’ and the ball was
continually lost to the opposition. This needs to be stamped out quickly if
Javea are to make any claim for a play-off place. Canals took their easy
options and left the rojiblancos in
their wake (quite literally once the heavy rain started falling). It would only
be a matter of time until the visitors scored.
And indeed the
first goal arrived with inevitability after 64 minutes, with Campos capitalising
on some poor defending to slide the ball past Ortola
at full stretch to send their sizeable albeit aged army of travelling fans into
celebration. The players piled on top of each other on the far side as if they
had just scored the winner in the final of the FA Cup. The rojiblancos looked at each other for answers; the game had just
been made very difficult indeed.
Javea tried
to pass the ball but continued to try the clever option rather than the easier
alternative; they are simply not good enough to carry on opting for such an
option. Canals passed the ball easily, they didn’t try any tricks and they were
a goal up.
The second
goal killed off any lingering hope of a revival as the rain continued to fall.
A defensive mistake allowed substitute Cris to lob the ball over Ortola
but all looked well as the custodian managed to leap back and palm the ball
onto the bar. However, the ball bounced back into play and Cris was able to
bury the rebound into the back of the net to double the advantage just two minutes
after coming on. This time they
celebrated as if they had scored the winner in the final of the Champion’s
League, just how important it was to them that they win this match.
And win it
they did, quite deservedly, to move into second-place in the table behind UD
Oliva. CD Javea slip to eighth but have a chance to reclaim some position with
another home game next weekend against CE Alberic. Ominously, Alberic knocked
six past Torrent CF, a side against which the rojiblancos scraped a draw last weekend. Manager Kenny Brown needs
to lift his troops for the clash and perhaps there are some more changes to be
made. CD Javea have some good players – but then so do Newcastle United and
Tottenham Hotspur.
