Although the socialist PSOE clearly won the municipal elections to secure more council seats than any other party, they failed to gain an absolute majority of 11 seats which would have handed them sole control and party leader José Chulvi moved to negotiate a coalition pact with the independent parties of Óscar Antón's Xàbia Democrática, whose debut at the polls perhaps stunned everyone except the most dedicated of party supporters, and Ciudadanos por Jávea, led by Juan Ortolà and who doubled their 2007 result to claim two seats on the council.
