VIVA ORGANISES SPECIAL "PLANT A TREE" DAY Monday 31st
October 2011
The Montgo is a symbolical mountain for all
people living in Javea. We can enjoy it
every day by looking to the north. Unfortunately, whether consciously or
unconsciously, we perform acts that spoil its landscape and destroy the
wildlife. Nevertheless we can undertake small actions that will enable us to
improve its condition.
On Sunday November 6th, Xàbia Viva, in collaboration
with the "Parque Natural del Montgó", will
be contributing to the continuing project called
“Plant a Tree and Care for Thousands”
which is a Government-sponsored environmental restoration campaign aimed at
conserving native vegetation in the Mediterranean regions and
specifically in five protected areas around the
Comunidad Valencia, including the Montgo, the 'Parque
Natural de la Sierra de Mariola' near Alcoy, the 'Parque
Natural del Turía' a few kilometres inland of the city
of Valencia, the 'Parque Natural de la Sierra Calderona'
a short distance to the north of the city along with
the nearby 'Parque Natural de la Sierra de Espadán'.
Along with a 200,000€ donation from the bank 'La Caixa', the project aims to
plant some 4,000 trees in those five parks as well as
carry out selective thinning to improve and encourage tree
growth whilst providing preventative fire
breaks. And it is hoped to achieve this by promoting
civic participation from municipalities, schools and
colleges and associations such as Xàbia Viva.
The object of the day on Sunday November 6th
is to reforest the main path starting from Las Planas and
leading to
the mountain of Montgó. There are adjacent paths and
shortcuts which have been formed by pedestrians and hikers which are acting negatively in two ways. Firstly, it encourages erosion and
secondly they create a negative image of the mountain. By this action,
Xàbia Viva hopes to recuperate the
vegetation and regenerate the soil, thus creating a positive image of the
mountain.
Those
willing to volunteer to help out with this project should
contact Xàbia Viva either by email xabiaviva@gmail.com
or by telephone on 654 304 836. The day begins at 8.00am
with volunteers meeting at the car-park on Avenida
Palmera.
