CHANGE AT THE HELM AT CD JÁVEA
Coach Antonio Villaescusa sacked; former Denia coach Juan Carlos Signes takes over

Wednesday 19th December 2018

JAVEA NEWS | CD JAVEA - JUAN CARLOS SIGNES

CD Jávea have revealed their new coach for the first team after Antonio Villaescusa was dismissed on Monday evening, less than 24 hours after the rojiblancos recorded their tenth draw of the season. Former CD Dénia coach Juan Carlos Signes was quickly installed at the helm and took his first training session on Tuesday evening as the club looks on him to turn those many draws into victories to lift the club back into the mix for the promotion spots.

The 1-1 draw at UD Alginet appeared to be the last straw for the board of directors. Although the club remains unbeaten in the 2018/19 season and sits just outside the top three in 5th position, much more was expected of a side that, on paper at least, promised so much more. Fans were already criticising the defensive nature of the side whilst lacking real firepower. Jávea may be able to boast the best defence in the league having leaked just eight goals but its paltry tally of just 18 goals from 16 games is beaten by every other side in the league bar two clubs struggling at the wrong end of the table.

After three successive draws, Villescusa was informed on Monday evening that his services were no longer required. Within hours former CD Dénia coach Juan Carlos Signes met with the board of directors and reached an agreement to take over the helm, bringing with him faithful assistant Miguel Angel Martínez who was at his side during his tenure at the club over the hill. He led his first training session with the first team on Tuesday evening to prepare the team for this Saturday's home game against Muro CF.

Signes arrives in Jávea with a decent pedigree, having led CD Dénia to the promotion play-offs in the past two seasons, although falling at the first hurdle to CD Utiel in 2017/18 and UD Vilamarxant last season. He is also familiar with several players at CD Jávea since Ayoze, Paco, Ferrán and Cristian have all worked with him previously. Signes left the Denia club in June of this year, ending a long association which began as a player when he was part of Dénia's recent 'golden era' when it reached the Segunda Divisón B and played in the Copa del Rey against Sevilla FC.

Antonio Villaescusa leaves the club after two and half season in charge. Another former CD Dénia coach, he arrived to replace Juanjo Cháfer who couldn't reach a deal with CD Jávea. The start to the 2016/17 season was less than impressive with the club slipping to 16th spot after six games but a recovery which saw a run of eleven games with just one defeat lifted the club to 5th and with a real chance of making the top three. But a wobble in the final stretch saw the club having to settle for 6th spot, their highest finish for five years. In the 2017/18 season opened with some promise, especially after a 6-0 away win at one-time local football giants UD Canals, but a 1-4 home reserve against bitter rivals CD Dénia kicked off the usual stumble which saw the club slide in the bottom half of the table. The opening of the new covered stand provoked rumours of a curse as the club struggled to find form after having fought back into contention and finished 7th. This season saw the club chalk up a 16-game unbeaten start but, after ten draws in 16 games, it was not enough for the club directors to remain convinced that Villaescusa was the right man for the job.
