The rojiblancos fought back to force a draw in top of the table clash

Monday 8th October 2018

JAVEA NEWS | CD Javea - Palau

Vicente Palau's second half strike forced a share of the spoils in a crunch match against fellow early pace-setters CF UE Tavernes de la Valldigna in front of a lively crowd at the Campo Municipal d'Esports. The visitors had taken an unlikely lead just before half-time through a debatable penalty with many in the ground clearly missing the apparent handball offence that resulted in the spot kick. It was very much against the run of play as the rojiblancos had launched wave after wave of attacks against the visitor's goal. However the penalty gave Tavernes renewed confidence and the second-half was a crunching battle of attrition with seven yellow cards shown to try and control the growing tempers on both sides. At the final whistle a 1-1 draw was a fair reflection on a very enjoyable game.

With knowledge that the winners could well top the league table, CD Jávea went all out right from the word go and had two great chances to open the scoring in the first five minutes. Forcing the first corner of the game after just three minutes, Cristian met Pau's kick well but his header was just a little too high. Two minutes later Paco fired in a fierce shot from just outside the area after a bit of a scramble on the edge of the area but once again the ball flew just over the bar. On 12 minutes Michael's shot was too high, we needed the goal to be a few centimetres taller.

Jávea dominated the first half with a succession of chances but just couldn't get the shots on target. Then, two minutes from the break, the referee pointed to the spot as Tavernes mounted a rare attack and it appeared that he had seen something that few others had. A handball offence inside the area. The Jávea players were understandably furious and Paco was shown a yellow card for his persistent complaints to the referee who was never going to change his mind. After a short delay, Tavernes' Penades sent goalkeeper Andrada the wrong way to give the visitors the lead and as the teams headed back towards the tunnel for the break, tempers began flaring. It was going to be an interested second half.

Three minutes into the second period it could have got a whole lot worse for Jávea when Ayala picked up the ball just outside the area thinking that an offside had been given but, despite the flag going up on the far side, the referee had not blown his whistle and thus had to award a free-kick. A fierce effort by Penades was blocked and pushed out for a corner. Nothing came of it but Tavernes clearly had renewed confidence and on 55 minutes Andrada tipped a difficult free-kick from Salom over the bar.

Jávea didn't get themselves back into the game until the hour mark when they forced their first corner of the half and five minutes later the equaliser arrived when Jávea win a free-kick just outside the area. The shot from Jávea's Salom was diverted for a corner and the resulting kick saw Vicente Palau meet the long ball at the far post and smash home to huge cheers of relief from the home crowd. The goal lifted Jávea and the game became one of attrition, back-and-forth as both sides looked for the winner. And it might have come for the visitors five minutes from time when substitute Joan broke free and charged unchallenged towards goal, passing to the unmarked Ferran in the middle of the park but the midfielder smashed his shot well over the bar with just the keeper to beat. And thus a draw reflected well the game.
