XÀBIA'S CHIRINGUITOS ATTRACT RECORD BIDS FOR 2018-2021 CONTRACTS
A bid of more than 85,000 a year secured the much-valued position close to the Arenal

Monday 6th June 2018

JAVEA NEWS | Xàbia Chiringuitos 2018-21

It appears that record bids have been offered to secure the five positions for the chiringuitos - beach bars - for the next four years. With the starting price at 15,000 euros a year, it was always expected that the bids would be far higher but the bid of more than 85,000 euros for the position closest to the Arenal beach zone was substantially larger than the winning bid for the previous for four years (70,119 euros) and clearly demonstrates just how valuable these positions have become in terms of profitability.

The bids are to secure these positions by pledging to pay it as an annual fee to the Ayuntamiento de Xàbia. It has been reported that the business which ran the Mintt chiringuito for the past eight years on the site closest to the Arenal has secured another four years with the 85,119 euro bid. The bid for the Benissero beach position where Baja Bay had been located for the previous four years was secured for 70,000 euros, almost double what was paid for the 2014-2017 period, whilst the other four positions were secured for bids between 28,000 euros and 52,000 euros. Full details will follow after the bids are evaluated by the town hall staff.

Subject to approval, the chiringuitos should be able to start operating on Friday June 15th although it will take some time to prepare the position with the platforms, structures, toilet facilities and catering (although kitchens are not permitted). Councillor Kika Mata has explained that the delay in the process of the new contracts has been caused by issues outside the control of the Ayuntamiento de Xàbia which meant that permission to occupy the coastal areas, effectively owned by Costas, was not received until two weeks before the tender process was opened. She added that the town hall staff have been making extraordinary efforts to carry out this process as effectively as possible but which still follow strict regulations.

The Ayuntamiento received almost 100 bids to run the seasonal services in Xàbia over the period of 2018-2021, facilities which aside from the chiringuitos also include the sunbeds and umbrellas on the beaches at the Arenal, Benissero, La Grava and Granadella as well as the hiring of kayaks and pedalos. The Ayuntamiento had expected to raise a minimum of 265,000 euros a year from these services. However some of the bids have far exceeded expectation with the Arenal services thought to have attracted bids of between 211,000 euros and 242,000 euros, well above the starting price of 175,000 euros. Clearly the Ayuntamiento coffers are going to benefit from this scramble to secure the services for the next four years.
