XÀBIA CELEBRATES WORLD BOOK DAY WITH SPECIAL READING
The day is marked by a non-stop reading of Cervantes' classic "Don Quixote"

Today - Monday 23rd April - is 'World Book Day', a celebration full of symbolism for lovers of literature that is celebrated around the world. In Xàbia the Municipal Public Library has organised an activity that involves dozens of people throughout the morning, a uninterrupted reading of the Cervantes classic 'El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha' which is considered the most outstanding Spanish literary work and one of the most outstanding ever.

Mayor José Chulvi was charged with beginning the task of reading the book and was joined by representatives from several organisations such as UNED de Xàbia, the international section of the Municipal Library and the 'Consell de Xiquets' as well as students from IES Antoni Llidó and the EPA amongst others.

The event has been coordinated by the municipal librarian Catalina Cardona and the person in charge of bring it to a close will be councillor Quico Moragues (Culture).

World Book Day is celebrated across the world as a means to encourage reading and the enjoyment of literature. In Spain it is also a day that the great Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes is remembered with the presentation of an award which bears his name and is one of the most important literary prizes in the world of Spanish language. Every year in the Círculo de Bellas Arts Academy in Madrid, there is a non-stop reading of Cervantes' masterpiece 'Don Quixote de la Mancha" by people from the world of culture and politics as well as members of the general public. In Catalonia it is also Sant Jordi - St George - in which it has become customary to give the gift of a book to men and a rose to women. Cities like Barcelona become enormous open-air bookshops and florists.


CELEBRACIÓN DEL DÍA INTERNACIONAL DEL LIBRO EN XÀBIA

Hoy es el Día Internacional del Libro, una celebración llena de simbolismo para los amantes de la literatura que se celebra en todo el mundo. En Xàbia, la Biblioteca Pública ha organizado una actividad literaria que ha involucrado a decenas de personas a lo largo de toda la mañana: una lectura continuada de “El  ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha”, considerada como la obra más destacada de la literatura española y una de las principales de la universal.

El alcalde, José Chulvi, ha sido el encargado de abrir esta la lectura, en la que también han participado representantes de organismos como la Uned de Xàbia, el club de lectura local, la sección internacional de la biblioteca o el Consell dels Xiquets, así como alumnos del Instituto Antoni Llidó o de la EPA, entre otros. La actividad, que ha sido seguida con interés,  ha estado coordinada por la bibliotecaria municipal, Catalina Cardona y el encargado de cerrarla será el concejal de Cultura, Quico Moragues.
