JAVEA NEWS | Charity Donation

Javea Community Fitness (JCF) was set up in October 2016, a non-profit community project where both the participants and instructors would own the initiative not only by volunteering to lead or participate in the fitness classes but also to nominate worthy causes to which the JCF could make a charitable donation. This month, it made its first contribution, handing over 300 euros to the Tanamera Hunting Dog Rescue, a small dog shelter based in Jávea which focuses on rescuing abandoned and abused Podenco hunting dogs.

Over the past four months, the JCF project has offered three HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training - classes a week amongst the trees of the Parque Montaner in the town above the Plaza de la Constitución. Thanks to the willingness of three instructors who give up their free time, participants have been able to enjoy a regular workout session in the open air. The project asks for a minimum donation of two euros to participate in the sessions whilst participants are also encouraged to put forward the name of a local charity which is close to their hearts to which the JCF can make a donation which the emphasis on assisting small-sized charities who do not have the fund-raising capabilities of bigger organisations.

Lizzie Benton, co-founder of the JCF project, said: "we were overwhelmed with the response we received right from the start and the enthusiasm from everyone has been fantastic. Social networks like WhatsApp and Facebook also make it easy for us to spread the news about classes and events quickly amongst our members". She explained that a free monthly introduction workshop is offered on the first day of the month to showcase a new activity to the community and guest instructors have been invited to give a Tai Chi workshop in December and a MentalFit class to take participants through visualisation and relaxation exercises earlier this month.

And, of course, if you are a fitness fanatic or a beginner, come and give the classes a go. You'll do yourself and your community a real favour!

TANAMERA Hunting Dog Rescue is an organisation based in Jávea which rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes Spanish hunting dogs. Without exception, these dogs enter the shelter as skin and bones so food is their first need. The refuge has to pay the bill for the dogs who often need special food for liver and heart problems as well as recovery and puppy food and on average this amounts to 335 euros a month. Add on vet costs for operations, blood tests and other treatments and the Tanamera Hunting Dog Rescue refuge needs all the help it can get.
