Drivers have been asked to avoid using their car between 3pm and 5pm on the route of the race

JAVEA NEWS | La Vuelta 2017

The Department of Public Safety has made the necessary preparations for the passage of the 2017 edition of the world famous La Vuelta a España through Xàbia this Sunday 27th August. Like the 2015 edition, the race stage, which is beginning in Orihuela at 1pm, will enter the town via the Carretera de Gata and pass along Avenida Palmela to the south of the historic centre and then along the Avenida del Pla through the Arenal to join the Travesía Cansalades through Pinosol towards El Poble Nou del Benitatxell where this stage, the ninth of the 21, will finish at the top of the mountain of Puig Llorença above the Urbanisation Cumbre del Sol.

Councillor Pepa Gisbert (Public Safety) has indicated that the competitors are expected to arrive early in the afternoon so drivers are being asked to avoid using their cars in the area of the race between 3.00pm and 5.00pm to avoid being held up or even hinder the passage of the race through the municipality.

To ensure any necessary access and the security of the participants, the Policía Local will deploy some 20 police officers along the course and they will be able to count on the support around 30 volunteers from the Protección Civil and various sports clubs in the municipality, especially the Club Ciclistas de Xàbia. The Ayuntamiento de Xàbia is recommending that those fans who would like to see the race pass through the town do so on foot.

LA VUELTA A ESPAÑA is part of the cycling world's famous Grand Tours three-race circuit alongside France's Tour de France and Italy's Giro d'Italia. It was first organised in 1935 but, after breaks during the Spanish Civil War and World War II, it has been held annually since 1955. The 2017 edition is the 72nd and started in Nîmes on Saturday 19th August, the first time it has started in France and only the third time it has started outside of Spain after Portugal in 1997 and Holland in 2009. When the race finished in Madrid on Sunday 10th September, the distance that will have been covered will be just under 3,300 kilometres.

Stage 9 is a 174 kilometre long section which starts at Orihuela and heads north passing through Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura, the outskirts of Santa Pola, L'Altet, Alicante, El Campello, Villajoyosa, Benidorm, Altea, Calp, Moraira, the top of Puig Llorença, El Poble Nou del Benitatxell, Teulada, Gata de Gorgos, Xàbia, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell and finishing on the top of 451m high Puig Llorença.

The passage of the race can be watched on television on TeleDeporte and La1 (where online streaming is also available) as well as EuroSport 1. Highlights of this stage as well as each day's racing are shown on ITV4.
