REGISTERED UNEMPLOYMENT IN XÀBIA DROPPED IN MAY
National unemployment also fell by its biggest margin since records began

Registered unemployment in Xàbia dropped by 67 to 1,493 at the end of May, the lowest level for the month for almost a decade. The unemployment rate of 8.95% is more than one and a half points below the regional rate and more than three points below the rate for the Comunidad Valenciana. On a national level, registered unemployment fell to 3,461,128, a drop of 111,908 as the country starts to experience to rise in tourism as summer approaches.

In Xàbia, the largest fall at the end of May was in Services which fell by 68 to 1,039; unsurprisingly, this sector, which includes hospitality (hotels, restaurants and bars) as well as banking and public administration, provides the vast majority of the contracts in Xàbia, accounting for just over 86% of the total amount during the month. The Construction sector fell by 1 to 249 whilst the Agricultural sector, which includes the vital fishing industry, rose by 2 to 21 and the Industry sector, which accounts for just over 1.5% of the total number of contracts, also rose to 52. The number of those registered unemployed who were not affiliated to a sector fell by 1 to 132.

Xàbia also saw a large drop in unemployment amongst the under-25s, falling to below 5%, the lowest figure of all the major municipalities in the Marina Alta.

Across the Marina Alta region, registered unemployment fell 806 to 11,193, an unemployment rate of 10.60%, of which just over 70% were from the Services sector.

For the Province of Alicante, unemployment at the end of May fell by 4,608 to 157,369, an rate of 13.20% with just over 62% off those out of work coming from the Services sector.

Across the Comunidad Valenciana, unemployment fell by 9,898 to 402,019, a rate of 12.40% with Services accounting for just over 66%.

Nationally, registered unemployment fell to 3,461,128, a drop of 111,908, not as much as the same period in 2016 but employment in Spain has grown more during 2017 and the figures for May are the best monthly data since July 2005. The biggest drops have been in those sectors relating to tourism, such as Hospitality and Commerce, but there have been drops in all sectors.
