REGISTERED UNEMPLOYMENT IN XÀBIA DROPPED IN APRIL
National unemployment also fell by its biggest margin since records began

Monday 8th May 2017

JAVEA NEWS | Unemployment - April 2017

Registered unemployment in Xàbia dropped by 131 to 1,560 at the end of April, the lowest level for the month since 2009. The unemployment rate of 9.35% is more than one and a half points below the regional rate and more than four points below the rate for the Comunidad Valenciana. On a national level, registered unemployment fell to 3,573,036, a historic drop of 129,281 which is the biggest margin since records began in the mid-1980s.

In Xàbia, the largest fall at the end of April was in Services which fell by 108 to 1,107; unsurprisingly, this sector, which includes hospitality (hotels, restaurants and bars) as well as banking and public administration, provides the vast majority of the contracts in Xàbia, accounting for almost 89% of the total amount during the month. The Construction sector fell by 11 to 250 whilst the Agricultural sector, which includes the vital fishing industry, fell by 3 to 19 and the Industry sector, which accounts for just over 1% of the total number of contracts, dropped 3 points to 51. The number of those registered unemployed who were not affiliated to a sector fell by 6 to 133.

The INE have also released provisional demographic figures for January 1st 2017 which show that the population of Xàbia has dropped  to 26,999, dipping just below the pyschological barrier of 27,000 for the first time since 2004 and a drop of some 6,150 people since 2013. Part of the reason for this dramatic fall in the population has been the refinement of the municipal register - the padrón - to remove foreign residents no longer living in the municipality who had failed to notify the authorities as well as the uncertainty of the consequences of Brexit on the town's large British population.
