REGISTERED UNEMPLOYMENT IN XÀBIA DROPPED IN MARCH
National unemployment also fell to its lowest level for seven years

Tuesday 11th April 2017

JAVEA NEWS | Unemployment - March 2017

Registered unemployment in Xàbia dropped by 109 to 1,691 at the end of March, the lowest level for the month since 2009. The unemployment rate of 10.13% is more than one point below the regional rate and almost three points below the rate for the Comunidad Valenciana. On a national level, registered unemployment fell to 3,702,317, thanks to record job creation. The first quarter of the year is usually one of the worst for the labour market in Spain but current figures show that the average drop in unemployment across the first three months of the year has been one of the best since 1999. And this positive figures are without the normal drop experienced during the Easter holidays which this year fall in the second quarter.

In terms of sectors, the largest fall at the end of March was in Services which fell by 98 to 1,215; unsurprisingly, this sector, which includes hospitality (hotels, restaurants and bars) as well as banking and public administration, provides the vast majority of the contracts in Xàbia, accounting for just over 84% of the total amount during March. The Construction sector fell by 14 to 261 whilst the Agricultural sector, which includes the vital fishing industry, fell by 3 to 22. Only the Industry sector, which accounts for less than 1% of the total number of contracts, saw a rise of 3 points to 54. The number of those registered unemployed who were not affiliated to a sector fell by 17 to 139.
