NEW
LIFE BREATHED INTO TOWN'S OLD CEMETARY Thursday 19th
January 2012
Small
improvements have breathed new life into Javea's ancient
San Joan cemetery. The works, carried out by the town
hall's Services department as part of an improvement
plan for urban spaces, have been carried out at the
old burial ground to the west of the town, close to
the bus stops near the olive tree roundabout.
Two
tosca boxes have been created in a space formerly occupied
by a row of abandoned niches, part of improvements made
to improve the image of the 200-year-old cemetery which
also solve moisture problems being suffered by the south
dividing wall of the adjoining ancient chapel of Sant
Joan which is thought to be at last another century
older than the graveyard which was closed in 1988.
Other
improvements include the construction of ramp that allows
access for maintenance vehicles to the rear as well
as a wooden fence and the installation of bollards to
prevent cars parking on the pavements surrounding the
enclosure.
Doris
Courcelles, head of the Services department, said that
the improvements are just part of a bigger project for
the area around the chapel and cemetery of Sant Joan.
Work will soon begin to improve the modest square on
which stand one of the old tosca stone crosses which
marked the perimeter of the municipality, including
improvements to the banks and the long set of steps
that leads up to the enclosure from Avenida d'Ondara.
