SPAIN'S
FOREIGN MINISTER VISITS JAVEA Saturday 7th
January 2012
The
Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo, made an official visit
to Javea on Jan 7th. He has had a second home in the Old Town for decades,
noting that Javea “is the ideal place to hold high-level meetings.” The
Minister has advanced the possibility of using the framework of the
Ibero-American Summit of Cadiz “to bring to Javea the ministers who will
participate, so they can discover the town's intellectual potential.”
The
mayor, Jose Chulvi, welcomed Garcia Margallo to the Town Hall, where he signed
the book of honour. Chulvi expressed his “joy and pride” that Javea “should
have a resident that is a member of the Spanish Government,” and especially one
with a ministry as challenging as the Foreign Office.
Chulvi
pointed out that the very day Garcia Margallo was appointed Minister, he sent
him a congratulatory telegram and he took this opportunity to
congratulate him once again on behalf of the entire Town Council, wishing him
luck and expressing his gratitude for making this official visit in his first
days in office.
Finally, the mayor of Javea informed the
Foreign Minister that this year Javea celebrates its 400th anniversary as an
incorporated town, giving him a facsimile of the official title granted by
Philip III in 1612. "We hope that you have us always present in your heart
and remember that this is your home, where we hope to see you regularly,"
the mayor concluded.
The Minister, who has a home in the Old Town, has made no secret of the
"special fondness I have for this town," one to which he travels
frequently and where he plans to retire. For this reason he has lent his
institutional support and vowed to do everything in his power to help Javea and
give prestige to a municipality he
"knows, visits and adores all four seasons of the year."
Saturday morning's reception was attended by members of the Town Council as
well as by the regional Ombudsman, Jose Cholbi.
