AMJASA RECORDS MAXIMUM WATER DEMAND FOR YEAR DURING AUGUST
Friday 2nd September 2011

javeamigos.com | DESALINATION PLANT

The municipal water company AMJASA registered last month its maximum demand for water of the year. Specifically, the week 8-14 August saw demand result in a flow rate of almost 35,000 cubic metres per day, of which some 19,600 cubic metres were provided from the wells belonging to the Ayuntamiento in the area of Ocaive (Pedreguer) whilst just over 14,700 cubic metres were produced by the municipal desalination plant which was built ten years ago.

As for the sale of water to neighbouring municipalities, AMJASA provided houses assigned to Teulada-Benitachell with 1,830 cubic metres with some 1,030 cubic metres supplied to Gata de Gorgos.

The fact that the summer has been particularly dry along with the higher demand for water through occupation of holiday homes was the cause for the highest water consumption of the year. However the demand was not significant enough to use more that two desalination units; the plant can run four such units and supply some 26,000 cubic metres per day, almost double the amount of water that was demanded during August.

The desalination plant in Jávea uses the reverse osmosis filtration method and is the first in the world to dilute the brine rejection, minimizing the environmental impact and avoiding damage to the Posidonia Oceanica sea grass, whose large underwater meadows form an important part of the ecosystem. In fact, according to reports from the University of Alicante, the company Acciona which manages the operation of the desalination plant has encouraged the recovery of marine wildlife as well as improving the municipal water supply which had previously suffered numerous outages and had even been forced to supply salt water.
