THE RESTORATION OF
THE IMAGE OF JESÚS NAZARENO

The current image of Jesús Nazareno was created by J.M. Ponsada in the 1940s just after the Spanish Civil War. In those intervening years, the passage of time as well as the physical stresses of the image's travels around the town of Jávea have contributed to a deterioration in its condition and it was the subject of a restoration campaign last summer which addressed concerns over the image's general condition.

During this work, the image was fixed properly to the base and a crack in the left shoulder was fixed, a consequence of the relatively hefty weight of the cross. In addition, the decoration was looked at and fixed or replaced as necessary.

The restoration work was conducted by Vicente Catalŕ Gisbert in Jávea, who worked through the summer and ensured that the image was ready for the procession from the Ermita del Calvario to the Iglesia de San Bartolomé on Sunday March 27th.

THE ORIGINAL IMAGE
OF JESÚS NAZARENO

On October 15, 1767, the original image of Jesus Nazareno de Salcillo arrived by boat at the port of Jávea. It was intended as a gift from the Duchess Dońa Maria de Moncada in gratitude for the village’s tributes to her new-born son. Sadly the Duchess died before the figure could be presented but her husband Luis Antonio insisted that the presentation still take place.

Many people came to greet it before it was carried on the shoulders of young seaman to the church of San Bartolomé. Almost immediately plans were made to build a home for the figure on the road between Jávea and Denia so that it would look over the village and in 1770 the first chapel of Calvario was constructed.

In 1834 the figure of Jesús Nazareno received urgent prayer to keep them safe from the cholera epidemic that was decimated the surrounding area. After no plague deaths were reported in that year, the village’s salvation was attributed to the image.

The original image was destroyed by "Comunistas" during the Spanish Civil War and the current only dates back to the 1940s. However, in honour of the original's arrival 200 years earlier, the bicentennial celebrations of the arrival of the image in Jávea included the naming of the Jesús Nazareno as Perpetual Mayor of Jávea. Ever since, the image has travelled with the baton of office at his feet.
